Heartworm Prevention

What are heartworms?

Dog Fall Swim
Heartworms are a blood parasite that our pets get through mosquito bites. When the heartworms mature they live in the heart and surrounding vessels causing damage to both the heart and lungs. Due to our mild climate and the life cycle of the heartworms, heartworm prevention must be given all 12 months of each year.

Recommendations for Dogs

If a dog contracts heartworms he or she can be treated with an oral medication followed by a series of deep muscle injections. The treatment takes several months to complete, and during… This time of reduced activity is very important to reduce the risk of the dying heartworms breaking apart and causing blocked blood flow to major organs.

To keep your dog safe we recommend you give Sentinel Flavor Tabs as your year-round heartworm prevention. One flavored tablet every 30 days keeps your dog safe all year! Just like any prescription medication a yearly exam is required. We also require a yearly heartworm test for our canine patients to ensure they are staying protected!

By purchasing your prevention or prescription medication directly from us you can be assured that if you have any questions, concerns, or problems we will have your back!

Your cat's doctor will discuss what testing and monitoring is needed and will help you develop a plan. Keeping your cat on monthly heartworm prevention is key to keeping heartworms away.

Revolution is our favorite heartworm prevention for cats. It is a topical medication that you apply at the base of your cat's neck every 30 days. We require a yearly exam to fill this prescription medication.
